Bombing Practice Upset
(New Zealand. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 21. Squadron Leader M. S. Gunton, flying a Sunderland flyingboat, was too accurate when he sank the former Navy minesweeper, Rimu, off Cuvier Island this afternoon.
On his first run, he dropped one depth charge near the bows, and one under the vessel amidships. The charge amidships broke the ship’s bacK, she sank almost immediately. Four Vampire jets and another Sunderland were left armed to the teeth with bombs and rockets and nothing to sink. The Rimu, a derelict hulk, had been offered to the Air Force for target practice.
