LYTTELTON “HIGHWAYS”

Classification Of Port Streets

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 19.

A request that Gladstone quay and Norwich quay should be reclassified as State highways immediately was made in the House of Representatives this afternoon by Mr N. E. Kirk (Government, Lyttelton) during discussion on the Works Estimates. “These roads will carry all the traffic when the road tunnel is complete,” Mr Kirk said. “At present, the Evans Pass road is classified as a State highway, and these roads will largely replace it. It would take the burden oft the local authority if these roads were declared State highways now.”

Mr Kirk also suggested that the State highway be extended west around Lyttelton harbour. He said that this would open up new areas, and could better be done by the National Roads Board than by local authority.
