Magistrate’s Court £3 Fine For Exceeding Temporary Speed Limit

“These temporary maximum ■peed limit signs are placed there to protect the road and the work-

men from flying stones and other hazards created by speeding motorists. Although the defendant’s speed was not excessive if things had been normal, it was high in the circumstances,” said Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when fining Helen Betty Ensor £3 for exceeding the temporary maximum speed limit of 20 miles an hour on the Main North road on May 5. Ensor, who was represented by Mr G. H. Gould, pleaded not guilty. Traffic Officer J. C. Butterfield, of the Transport Department, said that about 3.10 p.m. he was checking traffic approaching from the north at Belfast with a microwave speed detector. The road from Chaneys corner to the Belfast hotel was under reconstruction by the Ministry of Works, and portions had been tarsealed about two hours previously. A car checked over a distance of about a quarter of a mile gave a reading of 36 miles an hour when a temporary speed limit of 20 miles an hour had been imposed. The car was driven by Ensor and when stopped she admitted the speed and said She was not thinking. He told her she had passed four signs showing the temporary speed limit. The traffic officer produced a certificate of accuracy for the micro wave unit. Mr Gould said that the defendant was travelling towards Christchurch and she slowed down for the roadworks but then increased her speed to what seemed normal when she came to a clear space.

EXCEEDED SPEED LIMIT Phyllis Mary Christie (Mr I. D. Bennetts) who pleaded not guilty was fined £3 for exceeding 30 miles an hour in a gazetted area. Traffic Officer William Wilson, of the Transport Department, said he checked Christie’s speed at 45 miles an hour on the Main North road.
