ATTENDANCE AT CINEMAS
Every New Zealand cinema was on the average, less than a third full at each screening during the year, 1956-57,’according to figures released by the Government Statistician. Only 32.4 per cent, of the available capacity was occupied. Smaller cinemas which screened on odd days of the week had a higher proportionate attendance than theatres, in large urban centres such as Auckland. Lower Hutt, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. The latter had an | average attendance of 29.8 per cent, of capacity, the lowest of any in the country, against 44.7 per cent, at smaller theatres. Small cinemas forming part of a circuit had (he highest proportionate atendante, 57.1 per cent., being more than half full at the average screening. Attendance at the North Island urban areas listed was less than in the South Island cities—2B.4 per Cent, as against 34 "per cent.
