ADDINGTON MARKET Breeding Ewes Sell On Dearer Market

Sound values for all descriptions ruled at the weekly store sheep sale at Addington yesterday. Apparently many farmers haye yet to fill their quota of breeding ewes. A feature of a buoyant market was the enhanced values obtained for adult ewes of which there was a fairly large yarding, selling finishing about 5 p.m. This section of the sale might well be quoted as being up on the values ruling at recent ewe fairs as well as at Addington itself. There was plenty of buying power at firm rates for the two-tooths, but among the lambs the latest sharp drop in the fat lamb schedule was reflected in part.

The total entry for the sale was 19,813 head, compared with 30,350 last week. It comprised 3939 lambs, 3053 two-tooth ewes, 12,390 older ewes, and 431 wethers. STORE LAMBS The market for store lambs kept up surprisingly well. The total was 2951, compared with last week’s larger yarding of 6055. Average values were lower, which was only to be expected in the light of the recent sharp drop in the export schedule for fat lambs. The sale got away to a poor start. Buyers were very cautious, and before very long several pens of well-grown, good quality lambs changed hands at below last week's rates. This weakness did not last, however, and by the time the end of the first race was reached values had recovered to within 2s of the comparable sale last week and, with minor fluctuations, remained so until the eno. A fairly large proportion of small and unhealthy-looking lambs was on hand. The market for wether lambs was topped by Glen Colwyn Estate (Hundalee) with the sale of 82 at 435. Ewe lambs sold up to 665, which was the price paid to S. T. Poulter (Waimate) for 116, and the same vendor’s second run of 98 made 555. Values were:— Best wether lambs, 36s to 435. Medium wether lambs, 29s to 355. Light, 21s to 28s. Inferior and culls, 12s to 17s. Best ewe lambs, 55s to 665. Medium ewe lambs, 43s to 535. ADULT EWES There was again a heavy yarding of older ewes although not up to last week’s huge proportions. The total was 12,390, compared with 17,910 last week. A very large gallery of farmers followed the sale throughout the day. Everything found a home, the complete clearance effected including old and “footrotty” types of which there was a generous measure. On the average values rose by 4s to 5s over all classes, these prices being sustained right to the end. Top price for the day went to T. A large gallery followed the sale at various stages, but only the very best quality young Southdowns and good aged Southdown rams met with much demand. The rest of the offering, comprising plain and nondescript types of various breeds, was hard to sell, even at much lower rates. Best Southdowns sold up to about 30 guineas, with good to average Southdowns making 12 to 20 guineas.

BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 19. There was another small yarding in the fat cattle section at Burnside today, only 228 head, as against 236 the previous week. The quality of the yarding was much better than last week. A stronger price was maintained throughout. Last week’s smaller yarding of 2600 fat sheep and the Improvement in values attracted a much larger entry of 3000 today. In over-supply were ewes and older wethers. /A larger entry of 1350 fat lambs was offered.
