MAGISTRATE’S COURT
WEDNESDAY (Before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.) REMANDED
The accused had been in custody, and there were further charges pending, said Sergeant V. J. Townshend, when Arnold Leslie Burnett was charged with the theft of a round of cheese, valued at £5 ss. at New Brighton, on or about March 14. Burnett was remanded to March 24. He was admitted to bail of £75 in his own recognisance, with one surety of £75. SCAFFOLDING BREACH
Husband Brothers, Ltd., building contractor, was fined £3 on a charge of failing to notify the Inspector of Scaffolding when starting building work involving the risk of a fall of more than 12ft. The firm pleaded guilty by letter.
Mr E Somers, appearing for the Inspector of Scaffolding, said that the firm had erected a scaffolding at an Islington wool and skin works which had been found to be faulty. The action was brought as a warning to the firm and to other firms, that it was necessdry to obtain permits before erecting scaffolding. Scaffolding should be regularly inspected to ensure it was safe, and this could only be done if the inspector was notified, he said. NO TAX RETURN Thomas Ernest George Mark was fined £2 on each of two charges of failing to furnish income tax returns to the Inland Revenue Department. RUBBISH ON ROAD Maurice Augustus Elliott was fined £3 on a charge of placing rubbish on a public road, in an action brought by the Waimairi County Council. ADJOURNED A charge against Pyramid Machines, Ltd., of applying Social Security payments for other than their legal use was adjourned to March 26.
