Sportsman’s Notebook FENDALTON WINS CLUB SWIMMING COMPETITION

With 112 points, the Fendalton Amateur Swimming Club has won the interclub competition of the Canterbury Swimming Centre. Although the event was begun for the first time some weeks after the season had opened, its success in inducing more club spirit into the carnivals will probably ensure It becoming an annual contest. During the season, three points were awarded to each club registering a first placing, and one point was deducted for each swimmer who had officially entered but did not compete. “The new competition has proved most successful,” said the secretary of the centre (Miss Doreen Brown) yesterday. “For a long time we have faced the problem of a large number of scratchings at inter-club carnivals, but this new system has given the children club spirit and a real Incentive to compete.” A surprising feature of the points list Issued by MUs Brown s that the Elmwood dub, which has many strong swimmers, has minus 49 points. Consistently large scratchings during the season are the reason.

Kaiapoi dub won the B section of the competition. Points at the conclusion of the event were.— A Section.—Fendalton 112, Spreydon 102, Beckenham 60, Wharenui 41, St. Albans 17, Christchurch 13, Elmwood -49. B Section.—Kaiapoi 38, North Beach 29, Rangiora 10, Unwood 6, Rlccarton 6, Christchurch Ladles’ 4. * * * Allan As Lock Trevor Allan, the former Australian Ruby Union centre threequarters, will appear In a new role in a trial Rugby League match in Sydney. He has been chosen as a lock forward, a position in which he has not played since he began playing first grade football. Allan plays with the North Sydney Rugby League Club. * « * History Of Rugby The genuine Rugby enthusiast, Rugby statisticians, unions, referees and sports writers will

welcome the news that Mr A. C. Swan has prepared a supplementary history for his “History of New Zealand Rugby Football.” In his earlier book, the history of Rugby in this country was recorded from the first days to the end of the 1945 season. In the supplementary history the record is carried to the end of last season. The history is almost ready for the printers. * * *

Nunneley Casket Tennis

The Auckland Women’s tennis team, which holds the Nunneley Casket, almost lost it last weekend to Waikato. The Auckland team of Misses J. Glenie, B. Bryant, R. Dickson and L. Adams retained the trophy by 7 matches to 3. For Waikato, Miss V. Fladgate was in particularly good form. Canterbury will be playing Auckland for the Nunneley Casket this week-end. * * » Men’s Basketball

A New Zealand men’s basketball team may compete in the Asian Games in Tokyo this year. The president of the New Zealand Men’s Basketball Association and a member of the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association executive (Mr C. L. S. Cross) told a meeting of the Olympic body that the Aslan Games Federation would accept a New Zealand team at Tokyo If the request for entry to the games was made by this country’s Olympic organisation. Only entries from teams or individuals whose parent bodies were affiliated to the Asian Games Federation could normally be accepted for the Aslan meeting The chairman of the Games Association (Mr H. I. Austad) said that the basketball association’s request for competition in Tokyo would be sent forward provided that the association was not required to affiliate with the Asian body.

* * * Games Hats The special nylon panama hat which the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association chose as the official head-dress for the Empire Games team after a long controversy on the merits of caps and hats, is unprocurable. This has been announced by Mr H. I. Austad, chairman of the Games Association. The association will now attempt to obtain the necessary number of good quality panamas. * * * Shoulder Pads In the view of Mr T. H. Pearce, the ban on the use of shoulder pads in Rugby, imposed recently by the International Rugby Board, will not be rigidly erfforced. Replying to a question at the Auckland union’s annual meeting recently, he said that the “mere statement” that he had a sore shoulder could allow a Rugby player to wear shoulder pads. The question came from Brigadier J. G. C. Wales, who said he hoped the management committee would not enforce the ban. Mr Pearce said the ban was imposed to prevent the use of “gridiron-type” padding. A ban on the thin type of shoulder pads used in New Zealand should not be enforced, he said.
