SWIMMING Australian Union Objects To Approach To Swimmer

A rebuke at the method of approach used by an official of the Auckland swimming centre, Mr H. Vivian, for the Australian Olympic swimming champion. Miss Dawn Fraser, to tour New Zealand, was contained in a letter from the Australian Swimming Union received at last night’s meeting of the New Zealand Swimming Association's council. The union expressed its surprise that the invitation had not been directed through official channels.

At a recent conference of the Australian union, a note from Mr Vivian to the secretary of the South Australian association was produced, said the letter. “We are surprised at these attempts of negotiation. The correct method is for the application to come through your association to our union. We select the persons to represent Australia, and all the arrangements are made through the union,” the letter continued. It was a typical letter from the

Australian union, said the secretary (Mr Baxter O’Neill). AU Mr Vivian had tried to do was to find out whether Miss Fraser was available to tour this country. “I know Miss Fraser would love to come to New Zealand, but the union has refused to grant permission. You have to go about the matter in a roundabout method when the union's attitude is like that.

“Perhaps we could ask Miss Fraser over here for a holiday,” said Mr D. W. Cain. “Surely the union could not object to that.”

The council Is to write to the union expressing its sorrow that the matter had occurred. “At the same time, I think we ought to support Mr Vivian,”-said Mr Cain. Several other delegates agreed, but no action was taken.
