OAMARU CUP TRIALIST

Promise Pleases At Wingatui “rhe Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, March 18.

Promise, a light-weight candidate for the Oamaru Cup, was not all out when he finished on terms with Smart in a good trial at Wingatui this morning. Blue Count, a runner with strong credentials for the Oamaru Highweight, was also impressive in his work.

Delarmo drew attention to his prospects in the J. S. Hazlett Memorial Steerites at the Birchwood Hunt meeting in an attractive schooling bout over the steeplechase fences. Promise (L. W. Hare) and Smart (J, D. Pankhurst) covered the opening half mile in 53 3-5 sec and finished in line at the end of seven furlongs on the course proper in Imin 37 2-ssec.

The trestles on the course proper were about 60 feet out. Overhead conditions were ideal but the track was against fast times.

The Tongs <B. P. Kennedy). Delarmo (B. J. Anderton), and Sir Gerald (G. E. Lowry) were together over six furlongs in Imin 25 2-ssec, the first three furlongs in 42sec. It was a good workout for the three jumpers, which had previously schooled over the steeplechase fences. Golden Morn (H. T. Anderton) and Ben Ledi (B. P. Kennedy) finished clear of Meridian (R. J. Skelton) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 25sec, the last three furlongs in 43sec. Ben Ledi has almost recovered from a pricked foot, which prevented him from racing at Trentham last Saturday. Mitre Peak (H. T- Anderton) and Sydtrev (B. J. Anderton) were together ahead of The Era (R. J. Skelton) after five furlongs in imin 9 l-ssec. the first two furlongs in 26sec. Milord (J. D. Pankhurst) afid Vamoose (R. J. Bain) were given an easy run over the first two furlongs in 28sec and completed five furlongs in Imin 11 2-ssec. A three-year-old half brother by Beaumaris to the Auckland Cup winner. Coaltown, Milord is to make a fresh start in the Trial Stakes at Oamaru. On The Plough

Blue Count (G. E. Lowry) worked clear in the run home to shade Arabian Chief (B. P. Kennedy) and Cassius (J. D. Pankhurst) at the end of six furlongs on the plough in Imin 25 2-ssec, the opening three furlongs in 43 3-ssec.

Royal Pal (R. J. Bain) and Master David <R. J. Skelton), rival candidates in the Oamaru highweight event, were together over five furlongs in Imin 12 l-ssec, the first two furlongs in 27sec.

Rex Robe (B. J. Anderton) went over the same ground in Imin Usee after taking 28sec for the first two furlongs. Schooling

Delarmo-CB. :J Anderton) was more impressive than his stablemate, The Tongs (B. P. Kennedy' in a school over eight fences on the steeplechase course, but there was little between them. Both horses recorded attractive performances. Over the last three fences, the sod wall arid the double brush, they were followed by Sir Gerald (G. E. Lowry), which screwed a little at the last fence, but accomplished his task well.

A failure on the flat, Delarmo made the grade as a steeplechaser last season. He is due to make a fresh start at the Birchwood Hunt meeting on Saturday when he will be ridden by Mr George Philp, one of the most successful amateur riders in the South Island.

Al Capone (G. E. Lowry) and Royal Mail (B. Blair) were companions over the same fences and both horses accomplished their tasks with credit. They completed the round at a sound pace, Al Capone taking the last fence with a length to spare.
