RIOTS FEARED IN PARIS
“City In State Of Siege” PARIS, March 17. The American Associated Press reported tonight that more than 8000 members of the Security Forces and mobile police converged on Paris tonight and the French Government braced itself for possible rioting by Left and Right Wing extremists. These steel helmeted security units will take UP positions in the streets of Paris tomorrow when the Prime Minister, Mr Felix Gaillard, will go before the National Assembly to ask a formal vote of confidence. The Communists and the extreme Rightists have both called huge rallies for tomorrow night. The 8000 security and mobile police units called into Paris tonight in preparation for trouble tomorrow were put on the alert by the Ministry of the Interior.
Some .of the reinforcements were flown from as far away as Algeria. » Reports say that this indicates that the Government does not put much trust in the Paris police. Last Thursday hundreds of angry Paris police besieged the National Assembly to demand higher pay. The “Daily Herald” reported that so many armed police were in Paris tonight that it was almost in a state of siege.
