COLOMBO STREET LIGHTING

Improvement In Sydenham

Improved lighting for Colombo street, Sydenham, between Carlyle street and the Sydenham Post Office, was approved by the City Council last evening on the recommendation of the electricity committee.

A petition had been received from approximately 90 shop proprietors in the area asking for improved street lighting in the shopping centre, the committee said. While the petition said that Sydenham was the worst-lit shopping centre in Christchurch, the committee did not accept that as a reasonable representation. The highway lamps were spaced at 200 feet, as in many other shopping areas. Because .of the concentration of shops, the committee recommended that the spacing be improved to 150 feet, the highest standard used in any of the city highway lighting areas. “The petition also made somewhat extravagant statements about the voltage of supply to the shops,’’ the committee said. “These are not well founded, and a considerable amount of work has been done on the low tension reticulation in this area during the last year.’’
