New wine put down by licensed winemakers in the 1956-57 production year totalled 580.000 gallons. This compares with 509.000 gallons in the previous year, according to the latest Abstract of Statistics. In the latest year the survey covered 159 operators, only 21 of whom employed two or more persons on a full-time basis. The remainder operated mainly in a small way, with only part-time labour. Imports of wines for the first 11 months of 1957 totalled 236,000 gallons-, compared with 243,000 gallons in the 1956 full year.
