China

Sir, —One of your correspondents mentions he is determined to keep on about China. That is excellent, because he tends to ignore, or conveniently hides from, the horrors that occurred before China became short of the various commodities mentioned in his letter. The Chinese people are no doubt making the best of things—those, of course, who were left alive after the Communists had finished murdering, torturing, and imprisoning the people who did not want -this sinister system. It was brought in by force and therefore must be kept in by force. Communism, rated so highly by “P.J.A.” in China, yet is so reluctant to take its chance against parties. I wonder why?—Yours, etc., LESLIE JONES. March 8, 1958.

Sir, —N 0.... laboured illusion of the virtue of a government of which a majority in this discussion disapproves is either necessary or desirable. Nor can any abatement of the world’s evil be expected from opposing expressions of condemnation. No attitude ignoring the principle expressed by L. J. Schwarz in .her last sentence can be either practical or ethically acceptable. We cannot bind or destroy the Chinese people. We cannot alter their government. Nor must we pretend that the evil in the power that enslaves them cannot overflow and engulf us. The future stretches indefinitely before us and a massive Chinese nation looms as a prominent feature of it. permanent and powerful. The friendly interest and legitimate co-operation advocated by P.J.A. may assist in its painful transition from political infancy to some future condition of growth in which the present tyranny may be replaced by some freer expression of enlightened political will - Yours, etc., R.S March 5, 1&58.
