Southern Band's Success In N.Z. Quickstep Contest

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, March 9. The Kaikorai Brass Band increased its record of successive wins in the quickstep to seven at the National brass band championships at Carisbrook yesterday. Watched by a crowd of 6000, Kaikorai scored most points in music and military sections to win the A grade by 19 points. Kaikorai’s winning sequence started at Dunedin on the same ground in 1952. The present win gave the hat-trick of successes to the drum major, Mr N. Mangine, who took over in 1955 after being associated with pipe bands. A former B grade champion band, Derry’s, was runner-up. It scored well in military points. Discussing the music, the chief judge (Mr K. Smith) said the playing of the A grade bands had been outstanding. His points placed Kaikorai 10 points ahead of its nearest rival in this section. Invercargill Garrison gave one of the best displays of the day to win the B grade. The veteran drum major (Captain E. T. Eastwood), who has won several gold medals over the last few years, has announced his intention of retiring. The band won by scoring particularly well in the miltary section. Runners-up in the last two years, Te Awamutu had to rely on military points for its win in the C grade by six points. The top music band, Gore, dropped nine points in its marching. Last years’ winners, Caversham-Green Island, filled third place in this grade, a position it filled with both music and military groups. The winners of the D grade championship, Petone, had to be content with third in the quickstep, although it was awarded top music points by Mr Smith. Marton won, but the hightlight was the second placing of the St. Kilda Junior Band, in its first national contest.
