N.Z. Delegates To Tokyo Pan-Pacific Conference
Six of the 15 New Zealand delegates who will attend the Pan-Pacific and South-east Asia Women’s Association conference to be held in Tokyo from August 20 to August 31, 1958, live in Christchurch. The first and second emergencies also live in Christchurch. The following delegates were appointed at a recent meeting oi the executive committee of the New Zealand National branch of the association, held in Auckland: Dr Moana Gow, Miss Amy Kane. Miss Ellen Lea, Miss Mary McLean, Mrs R. A. Young, Mrs W Cooper, Mrs D. R. Jackson, Miss A. Joyce, Mrs Mildred Scott, Mrs T. Laurenson, Mrs T. Moss, Miss Vida Barron, Miss M. Seaton, Mrs Doreen Grant, Miss Avis Bradstock. Miss McLean is vice-chairman of the New Zealand national branch of the association and was its secretary from 1949 to 1955. She is a past-president of the New Zealand Physiotherapists’ Association, and has taken a prominant part in Christchurch Ibcal bodies for many years. She is at present a member of the Christchurch City Council and the North Canterbury Hospital
Board. She was a former president of the United Nations Association of New Zealand and is the New Zealand representative on the International Council of Women’s Standing Committee on Housing.
Mrs Young is secretary of the New Zealand national branch and a vice-president of the Christchurch area group of the association. She was a New Zealand delegate to the conference held in Manila. Mrs Scott is an executive member of the New Zealand national branch of the association and was a delegate to the conferences held in Christchurch and Manila. She is the third vice-president of the New Zealand Federation of University Women, and attended the regional meeting of the international federation held in Manila in 1955.
Mrs Laurenson, who is probably the youngest New Zealand delegate, is the mother of three children. She spent three years as a V.A.D. with the New Zealand W.A.A.C. in the Middle East during the war and received six service medals. About four years ago she renewed her accountancy studies and has now completed all the major subjects and recently sat the finals of the professional accountancy examination. She was a member of the committee which established the Nursery Play Centre at Cashmere and was for three years a member of the Cashmere Free Kindergarten Committee. Mrs Moss is a vice-president of the New Zealand Maori Women’s Welfare League, and is president of the Christchurch League. Mrs Grant is Dominion president of the New Zealand Federation of University Women and was president of the Christchurch Y.W.C.A. from 1950 to 1955. She was Canterbury provincial president of the League of Mothers from 1950 to 1956 and was a New Zealand delegate of the Y.W.C.A. world conference held in Marysville, Australia. She was an executive member of the Christchurch area group of the PanPacific association from 1952 to 1955.
The first and second emergencies are Mesdames M. Evans and G. Cree.
The Federation of University Women has requested that Mrs A. Reid, wife of the New Zealand Minister to Japan, he added to the delegation on its arrival in Tokyo. Mrs Reid has written offering her assistance to the delegation.
The New Zealand Medical Women's Association has signified its intention of nominating a professional nutritionist to attend the conference, and has asked the Government for financial assistance.
