TROTTING Single Derby’s Easy Victory At Washdyke

Single Derby made a successful first appearance from N. L. Berkett s Yaldhurst stables when he led from end to end in the £lOOO Timaru Handicap, the first leg of the double at the Timaru-Trotting Club’s autumn meeting at Washdyke on Saturday? Single Derby was pacing well within himself all the wav and he could easily have widened his advantage of two lengths over Kelso at the post.

Single Derby is a six-year-old gtallion by Logan Derby from Isabel Derby, and he is raced by j,lr B. Elliot, of Auckland. He will have numerous opportunities o f extending his record at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting later this month. Single Derby’s win was . too decisive for excuses to be offered for the beaten horses which were headed by Kelso, Fourth Edition and Mountain Brigade. The second leg of the double, the Washdyke Handicap, was won by Toronto Boy, which .gained a good win over Radar and Toka Boy.

The Single Derby-Toronto Boy combination returned £Bl 5s for £l. Blue gained his second win from as many starts in the Timaru Nursery Stakes, but he dismayed his admirers when his driver, F. G. Holmes, had to shake him up in the straight to hold off Cheam by a length. Cheam gave him a big start over the final mile and her placing was full of merit. As the other two-year-olds continue to improve, Blue will be hard put to maintain his unbeaten record if he fails to race more generously than he did on Saturday. The meeting was held in perfect weather before a large crowd. The track was firm. Totalisator investments amounted to £39.131 10s, including £3574 10s on the double, compared with £43.759 10s last year.

Single Derby’s Win Maharaja, Macklin, and Dinnie Daley lost ground at the start of the Timaru Handicap. Single Derby began best and led out from Kelso and Gold Moana. He set an easy pace most of the way, with the field bunching about the half mile. However. Single Derby was not troubled to hold his lead, and he was pacing easily at the straight entrance, where he was followed by Kelso, Responsive. Pointer. Ricochet. Fourth Edition. Mountain Brigade. Single Derby did not look like surrendering his- lead, and he won comfortably by two lengths. Kelso trailed Single Derby all the way. He ran on well for second, without appearing likely to trouble the winner. He was two lengths and a half in front of the favourite. Fourth Edition, which was fairly handy most of the way. However, he had to cover extra ground over

Nursery Stakes % Ardena, Adroit, Cheam, Prince. Ceremonial, and Smokey Diamond lost, ground at the start of the Timaru Nursery Stakes. Blue began well from wide out, and he was fifth at the end of half a furlong. He quickly improved his position and raced past Ayrland at the end of three furlongs and a half. He opened up a lead of four lengths over Ayrland at the half mile, with Stormlea, Chelsea Lady, Cheam, Fair Loan. Prince, and Ceremonial next, two lengths in front of Laika, with a similar distance back to Adroit. Cheam set out after Blue racing across the top and was within a length of him racing to the straight, with Stormlea, Fair Loan, Ceremonial, and Adroit next. Blue was under .pressure at the furlong and he fought on to win by a length. Cheam, which lost a lot of ground at the. start, did well to get up for second, three lengths in front of Fair Loan, which also made up ground. Stormlea was only a head back, fourth, a length in front of Adroit, which was one of the slowest beginners. Adroit put in a tremendous run over the last six furlongs and did well to finish so close. Ceremonial was four lengths back, sixth, three lengths in front of Prince, Court Out, Ayrland, and Chelsea Lady.

e Upset in Sprint Gold Light caused a major surprise when he won the Wai-iti Handicap. His win dividend of £6B 15s 6d was the largest of the day. Gold Light began very fast and took the lead at the end of just more than two furlongs. He set a sound pace in front and turned for home ahead of Signet Ring,- with Fyvie Queen, Ponty, Stellar, Night Owl, and May Hall handy. Gold Light did not look like surrendering his lead, and he won well by a length and a half. Fyvie Queen received a good run all the way and held on well for second, a neck in front of Stellar, which made up groundWover the last three furlongs. Night Owl also had her chance and she battled on for fourth, a length behind Stellar, and a length and a half in front of Signet Ring. Commander Spangle and May Hall headed the others. Results.—
