CORNFLAKE FANCIED

Main Race At Wingatui

Cornflake is expected to make a successful return to middle distance racing in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, the main race and first leg of the T.AB. double at Wingatui tomorrow. He was tried over six furlongs on Dunedin Cup day and, not surprisingly, finished in the ruck. But his good form at a mile and beyond will be -the best guide to his chance over 11 furlongs in this field. Cornflake won the mile Jockey Club Handicap and beat all but Teaka at a mile and a half in the Metropolitan Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting. In a light programme since then he has a third in the Wellington Racing Club’s January Handicap to his credit • Cornflake has 8-0 and will receive 151 b from the Dunedin Cup winner. Shoal. Shoal won the Dunedin Cup under 8-6 J with great ease on February 15. Although she has a good weight, and will not find the shorter distance to her advantage. she, should beat most, if not all, of tfiose that finished behind her in the Dunedin Cup. The exception could be the Orari-trained Royal Halyard. Royal Halyard made a lot of ground for fourth in the Dunedin Cup after appearing to be hopelessly placed three furlongs out. He has 7-5 and if he can be ridden closer to the pace in this field he will be a formidable light-weight. Desert Cloud, racing consistently at present, looks the best prospect of the others. The Second Leg

The Gore-trained Darby could make first-day sprint form valueless in the Flying Handicap, the second leg of the double. Darby is a five-year-old gelding by Treasure Hunt from Salabond owned and trained at Gore by T G. Pollock. He made a big impression in the south when he won the seven-furlong Charlton Handicap on his home track on February 8. The safely-held run-ner-up was My Friend, which filled the same position behind Purser in the sprint on Dunedin Cup day. My Friend is eight, but racing solidly, and will be generally regarded as one of the stronger place prospects.

The imnrover in the field is probably Palace, which had only two races earlier on his present campaign.

) A year ago Palace was third in J the Wellington Thompson Handi- } cap in much more distinguished ) company. He won against the ) sprinters at Wyndham in October > and was a close fourth in the Jockey Club Handicap, won by Cornflake, at Riccarton on November 13. ■ A peak effort by Mighty Dollar j might give him a second success 1 in the James Hazlett Gold Cup, o a mile weight-for-age race, with | penalties. 5 Mighty Dollar won the race as 4 a five-year-old two seasons ago. 4 He was temporarily in retirement ■J not long after but since brought 0 back to racing has won the C.J.C 0 Stewards’ Handicap and Challenge 0 Stakes. o Ark Royal, from Wingatui. and the Riccarton-trained /Watch and Wait will probably be Mighty Dollar’s strongest opponents.
