European Union Debate

(Rec. 11 p.m.) ROME, March *5. The British Foreign Secretary. Mr Selwyn Lloyd, and the Foreign Ministers of six other West European nations meeting today are expected to “rough out” a common line on the latest Soviet proposals on the summit talks. Mr Lloyd and the Ministers from France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg are meeting as the West European Union Council to discuss co-ordination of the defences of their nations. In unofficial contacts the main debate is expected to centre on Russia’s demand that a date for summit talks be fixed before a meeting of Foreign Ministers, which it is suggested should be held next month.

Another question for the Ministers today is how much military information they can give to tomorrow’s meeting of the Western European Union Assembly, composed of members of the seven Parliaments, which has been pressing for more facts on which to base its debates.
