N.Z. RESEARCH IN ANTARCTIC Combined Project Suggested

It would be neither difficult nor expensive for New Zealand to cohtinue scientific research in the Antarctic, Rear-Admiral G. F. Dufek, commander of the United States Antarctic expedition told a meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society last evening.

“I was very happy to hear the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) say that New Zealand would continue scientific work in the Antarctic,” Admiral Dufek said. “When Sir Edmund Hillary gets back to Wellington I hope to sit down with him and see what we can map out in the way of a combined project down there. “Without great expense to the New Zealand Government it could continue its work. New Zealand has provided us with airport and port facilities, and we would be ready to haul 1000 or 15000 tons of supplies and equipment to the Antarctic. New Zealand could continue with its scientific work with 12 or 16 men who could spend a year there.” he said.

“International co-operation in Antarctica has been marvellous,” Admiral Dufek said. “No-one is hiding anything from anybody— I wish the rest of the world could get on just as well. I hope the honeymoon lasts.”
