FACIAL ECZEMA IN NORTH Mild Outbreak In Auckland Area
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 5.
A mild outbreak of facial eczema is now known to have occurred in most districts of the Auckland province after the rains that fell on dried-up pastures a fortnight ago. Since then, symptoms of eczema have been seen in ewes and lambs, and damage has been reported in livers examined at freezing works. No single district of the province was wholly free from eczema, said Mr I. G. Watt, livestock superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, in Auckland. Liver damage was noted in lines of ewes and lambs from all districts, but the incidence was not serious. This indicated that there were toxic pastures in most districts during the warning period, but that those not toxic enough to cause a serious and widespread outbreak. The first cases of facial eczema in sheep this summer to Taranaki were reported today. The animals were reported yesterday. The animals were in a flock which had been grazed on the Rahotu domain. Of 26 slaughtered /it the Waitara freezing works half were I condemned.
