SUNDAY FRUIT SELLING
Application Granted
An application by Rossmore Stores, Ltd., Cashmere, for exemption from week-end restrictions in selling fruit and flowers was heard by Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr R. B. Shand appeared for the applicant, and Mr B. A. Barrer for the Retail Shop Assistants’ Union, which objected to the application. Archibald Henry Gray, managing director of the company, said that the shop was near the end of Colombo street, at the foot of the hills. There had been frequent requests for flowers and fruit on Sundays, when the shop was opened for dairy trading. The demand was mainly from visitors to the two hospitals and the rest-home nearby. “I feel that anything that can be done for those who are ill or convalescing in the sanitorium should be done,” said the Magistrate. He allowed the company exemption to sell fruit on Sundays, between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
