SWIMMING INTER-SCHOOL SPORTS AT CENTENNIAL POOL

Eight of the 12 events at the inter-secondary school swimming sports yesterday were won by the

Christchurch Boys’ High School. For the first time, the sports were held at the Centennial Pool, and previous records, set up in smaller pools, were all expunged. The best times over this year and the next two years will become the new records.

The very strong Boys’ High School team included two national senior champions, C. McFadden and G. Brittenden. Although his favourite distances were not part of the programme, McFadden had an easy win in the 110 yards senior backstroke. Brittenden, the New Zealand senior 220 yards breaststroke champion, was hard pressed to win the 110 yards breaststroke, and G. Johnson (Christ’s College) was only beaten at the touch.

The other Boys’ High School swimmers to win finals were G. Le Cren, P. Harrow, and D. Eaton, and the school teams also won the senior, intermediate, and junior relays.

G. Dann (Christchurch Technical College) was the outstanding performer, his 63.25ec for the 110 yards intermediate freestyle being 4sec inside his own Canterbury record. Dann, who copies the distinctive round-arm action of one

of New Zealand’s finest swimmers, F. R. Lucas, beat A. McPhail (Boys’ High School), a strong favourite. J. Fisher (Xavier College) caused another upset when he beat D. Eaton (Boys’ High School), the Canterbury butterfly champion, in the final of the senior 110 yards freestyle. Eaton had beaten Fisher in the heats. Abbreviations used in the results are:—BAS. (Boys' High School), C.C. (Christ’s College), St. A. (St. Andrew’s College), St. B. (St. Bede’s College), C.WBS. (Christchurch West High School), C.T.C. (Christchurch Technical College), P.H.S.
