Control Of Itinerant Auctioneers
‘ Commando raids by hit-and-run auctioneers are an offence against freedom and free enterprise,” said Mr S. C. Childs (Pukekohe) moving a recommendation yesterday at the conference of the Municipal Association giving local authorities specific power to prohibit, restrain or regulate the operations of itinerant auctioneers. “They leave a lot of people lamenting behind them,” he said. A delegate said that local bodies should have the right to protect residents and tradesmen. “Are we satisfied that the position is being abused to the extent that warrants restriction?" asked Mr W. P. Hartatenge. It would be entirely wrong if a reputable Christchurch auctioneering firm without an office or staff in Ashburton could not hold a sale in Ashburton.
Mr A. L. Back (Cambridge) said the people had to be protected from themselves. "The housewives think they are getting bargains, but after these itinerant auctioneers have gone the tears are shed.” said another delegate. Often stolen goods were sold.
The remit was carried by 134 votes to 29.
