November 28. The “Chattanooga Times’’ said today that there was a substantial, if not a majority sentiment among responsible Republicans in Washington that President Eisenhower should withdraw from office as a result of his latest illness.The newspaper’s Washington correspondent, Charles Bartlett, said that private conversations with [these Republicans] disclosed their apparent readiness to contemplate the prompt accession of Mr Richard Nixon to the Presidency.’’ Mr Bartlett wrote that these persons, whom he described as “loyal Eisenhower Republicans in the Administration. Congress and on the political periphery,” felt that the accession of Mr Nixon might be the best for the country.
