CONSTABLE’S CONDUCT
Police Inquiry In
A special police inquiry into the activities of a constable who is alleged to have been selling liquor after hours in a Christchurch hotel is expected by the Controller-General of Police (Mr S. T. Barnett) to be completed within a few days.
Mr Barnett commented yesterday from Wellington on allegations that a constable attached to the Christchurch Central Police Station had been serving liquor in the hotel during Sundays, and said: “We are aware of these allegations and a wide and intensive inquiry has been ordered. The inquiry is being conducted by an inspector of the Christchurch police, and the report, which will be handed to the Superintendent of Police in Christchurch (Mr D. R. Sugrue), is virtually completed.” Mr Sugrue had been delegated powers to prosecute any offender under the police regulations at a sitting of a special police inquiry, added Mr Barnett.
