Magistrate’s Court Incorrect Statement To Postal Officer Admitted

Louisa Christian Jones, aged 51 , (Mr A. B.Harman), was convicted i and ordered to come up for seni tence if called on within 12 I months when she pleaded guilty before Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to making a false statement to a ! Post and Telegraph officer at New ,Brighton on July 27. I Senior-Detective J. B. McLean . said accused had opened an account with Hay’s, Ltd. and because of financial difficulties had ~ot into arrears with her payments. She had promised to pay £6 a month. When pressed for nayment she told the postmaster •at New Brighton that she had posted an unregistered letter containing £5. After investigations had been made by detectives she i admitted she had not sent a letter ■ containing money.

Mr Harman said the act of the accused was more stupid than criminal and she had panicked when she found she could not meet her commitments. She had received a letter threatening legal proceedings, and it was to stall off the evil day that she had acted as she had done

REMANDED FOR SENTENCE Ronald Spencer Lorgelly, aged 26, pleaded guilty to charges of the theft of a suitcase and contents valued at £l5B, the property of Peter Kolmer. and clothing valued at £l3 17s 6d. the property of Lupo Mataia. on November 14. Senior-Detective J. B. McLean said that on November 14 Lorgelly returned to his boarding house in Christchurch and commenced to pack up. His landlady saw him in another boarder’s room before he left for the railway station. He later pawned a stolen razor for £2. All the property had been recovered and accused admitted having stolen it. A suitcase which he had taken was damaged to the extent of £1 10s. Accused had been released recently from prison and had a long list of convictions on many serious charges. Lorgelly was remanded to December 9 for sentence and a probation officer’s report.

ILLEGALLY ON RACECOURSE Charles Wallace Crone. William Towson Lowther, Kenneth Charles Gay and Lyall Dudley Gay were each fined £5 for illegally trespassing on the Addington trotting track during the holding of a race meeting. INTOXICATED DRIVER IMPRISONED Leslie Charles Robert Williams, aged 30, a hotel steward, pleaded guilty when charged with being under the influence of drink or drugs when driving a motor-car in Hereford street on November 27. Inspector C. H. Reardon said that at 11.55 p.m. Constable Lee, on cycle patrol, saw a motor-car being driven in a very erratic manner in Hereford street. Later he took Williams to the police station where he was certified by Dr. F. L. Scott as not fit to drive a motor-car. . Williams was sentenced to imprisonment for seven days and his licence was cancelled for 18 months. PRISONER SENTENCED Trevor James Garlick, aged 21 (Mr N. W. McGillivray), was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment on charges of unlawfully taking a motor-cycle and receiving stolen goods valued at £5, the sentences to be concurrent with one of five years’ imprisonment he is at present serving. REMANDED Harold Maurice James Smithers aged 39 (Mr N. W. McGillivray), was remanded to December 5 on charges of being a rogue and vagabond and with breaking and entering the Provincial Hotel on October 1. Stuart Charles Maynard, aged 27, a salesman (Mr R. J. de Goldi), was remanded to December 5 on a charge of theft at Masterton on August 1 of £275 by failing to account for this amount to Watson Jewellers, Ltd. In asking for a remand Mr de Goldi said his application also applied to three other charges which were being preferred against his client. A man, whose name was ordered not to be published, was remanded to December 5 on a charge of stealing £lOO when a servant. Mr M. G. L. Loughnan appeared for accused whose bail was renewed. Leo Brendon Collins, aged 53, was remanded to December 5 when he appeared on two charges of false pretences at Lyttelton on November 16 and 21. A charge of stealing goods valued at £l5 at Springston on October 12 against Cyril Joseph William, aged 36 (Mr J. B. Weir) was adjourned to December 5. A 20-year-old youth (Mr N. W. McGillivray), whose name was ordered not to be published, was remanded to December 5 on a charge of indecently assaulting a female. Bail was allowed in the sum of £5O with one surety of £5O.

On a charge of indecently assaulting a 15-year-old girl on September 27, a 17-year-old youth (Mr W. G. P. Cuningham), whose name was ordered not to be published, was remanded to December 9 for a Probation Officer’s report. Bail was allowed in the sum of £5O with one surety of £5O. The youth pleaded guilty. ASSAULT On a charge of assaulting a female, Albert Henry Uren, aged 37, was convicted and discharged. John Charles Banfield, aged 17, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Paul Ronald Beale on November 3. Beale had been hit in the leg by a shot fired from Banfield's air rifle, said Inspector C. H. Reardon. Banfield had said he meant only to frighten Beale. Banfield was convicted and fined £5. WILFUL DAMAGE ’ “I am sorry to see you are getting such a wedding present,” said the Magistrate to Alexander Barclay, aged 22, a workman, when he was convicted on a charge of wilful damage to a telephone box window, valued at £2 Is. the property of the Post and Telegraph Department, on September 9. The Magistrate had asked Barclay if he was married. “Getting married today,” Barclay replied. "This is the second occasion you have been before the Court for this type of offence,” said the Magistrate. DISTURBING THEATRE AUDIENCE lan George McLintock, aged 17, was convicted and fined £3 on a charge of casting offensive matter in a public place, and £3 on a charge of disturbing a theatre audience on October 18. Edward Foote, a theatre fireman, said ‘‘an evil smell of which one drop would clear the court” had been poured out on the floor in the Tivoli Theatre. McLintock had the bottle which contained hydrogen sulphide. McLintock had been before the Court on numerous traffic offences, said Inspector C. H. Reardon. (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) FINED £l2 Milton Edric Halligan, aged 53, a company director, was fined £lO on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car in Hereford street on November 15. Hglligan, who was represented by Mr J. B. Weir, pleaded not guilty. On a further charge of having no warrant of fitness, to which he pleaded guilty, he was fined £2.

Sergeant A. W. Ball said that he found Halligan sitting in the front seat of his car in Hereford street in the early hours of the morning on November 15. He was unfit to drive and was arrested and taken to the central police station. “While you are in the motorbusiness you would be wise to lay off exploits of this kind,” the Magistrate told Halligan. “I am not obliged to take your licence under the particular section under which you are charged.” IDLE AND DISORDERLY Allen Garrett Penrose, aged 38, a workman, who pleaded not guilty, was sent to gaol for seven days on a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. Constable K. Duffield’gave evidence of finding Penrose asleep in a railway carriage early yesterday morning. CIVIL CASE (Before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M). D. A. Clarke, an agent, claimed £76 commission on the sale of two properties from J. Black, a land agent. Plaintiff was nqn-suited with costs to the defendent.
