SOVIET HOUSING PROGRAMME
Increased Activity In Moscow (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 28. Forests of cranes in southern and eastern areas of Moscow were signs of an increased programme of housing construction in Russia, said a young Auckland lawyer, Mr John Geddes, who has returned from a 53,000 mile world tour. He spent 10 days in Russia with a party of Danish students. He said today that housing seemed to be the biggest problem, but that huge blocks of flats were being built. The average Russian income was probably a little higher than that of the Englishman, said Mr Geddes, but the cost of living appeared to be almost double in Russia.
Drab clothing and many dilapidated buildings, especially in Moscow, left a dreary impression. The people seemed to be happy, however, he said.
