Binding Link To Career

‘‘This branch is a nursing lifeline, a link which keeps you bound to the career you would have continued if you had not married and set *up homes of your own,’’ said Mrs M. Chambers, president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association, speaking to the annual report at the annual meeting last evening. Mrs Chambers congratulated student nurses’ groups on their reports of the year’s activities. “I don't think we need to have any fears for the future,’’ she said.

Delegates from the branch to pther organisations were given by Miss M. McLean (Pan-Pacific and South-east Asian Women’s Association) and Miss E. Foster (C.0.R.5.0.). Miss D. Buchanan read a report from Miss I. T. Blathwayt on the work of the Save the Children Fund, and Miss P. McEwan read a report on the National Council of Women prepared by Miss B. Helliwell. Book tokens, awarded by the branch for essay competitions, were presented by Mrs Chambers as follows:—Psychiatric schools’ section, Mr C. J. Kamermans (Sunnyside Psychiatric Hospital); general nursing schools’ section, Miss Patricia Ann Robinson (Christchurch Public Hospital); maternity schools’ section, Miss Hermine Fink (Burwood Hospital); midwifery schools’ section. Miss Ruth Carter (St. Helens Hospital).

Officers were elected as follows:— President. Mrs M. Chamoers; vice-presidents, Misses D. Buchanan and M. Rae; council. Misses M. Corkill, B. Helliwell. M. Little. E. Kent-Johnston, N. Tait, D. Hill, L. Murray, S. Rolls. Te R. Hughes and P. Dudderridge; delegates to Pan-Pacific and South-east Asian Women’s Association, Miss, M. McLean and Mrs G. Goodall; delegate to C.0.R.5.0., Miss E. Foster; delegate to the Save the Children Fund, Miss I. Blathwayt; delegates to the National Council of Women, Mesdames M. Wood and M. Hyde; delegates to the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association. to be held in Christchurch in April, Misses Te R. Hughes, J. Ritchie, J. Taylor,’ and Newman.

The monthly meeting of the Cpreydon Garden Club was held recently, when Mrs Boswell presided over a large attendance of members. Three new members were welcomed by the president. The guest speaker was FJr J. Watling and his subjet was roses. He gave a Comprehensive talk on the correct way to buy. plant, prune and spray roses. Mr ’Vatljng answered various questions. Mrs Monson propo'sed the vote of . thanks to Mr Watling. Afternoon tea hostesses were Mesdames Gyde, Finlay, Haley and Hogsden.
