Public Telephones
Sir,-—Motoring to Sumner the other day and finding myself in need of a telephone in a hurry. I was surprised to find what a long stretch of Ferry road, from Woolston to Redcliffs, is without a public telephone. An obvious place, where I fully expected to find one, was at the foot of St. Andrews Hill. Surely this muchused road could be better served. —Yours, etc., BUTTON A. November 21, 1957.
[The regional engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department - (Mr L. O. Tyrrell) said that the department normally provided public telephones in residential | areas where they would serve residents and others and return enough revenue to pay the costs of operation. Most of the “long stretch” of Ferry road, between Woolston and Redcliffs, was through vacant land or water. One recent request for a public telephone on this route was, however, being investigated.]
