Living Standards
Sir.—During the last two years, since my return from Australia after having spent 30 years in Sydney. I have been a little puzzled to read, in letters and articles in your journal, references to the “high standard of living” in New Zealand. I am a tradesman and received £l9 4s a week in Sydney and. in the last two years, increases have brought this up to between £2O and £2l, some contracting firms paying more than this. In Christ church I receive £l4 10s a week,
which I find is quite a good salary for New Zealand. My wife and I find the over-all cost of living somewhat lower here, but certainly not anything like the 50 per cent, difference in wages. In other words we were much better off in Sydney than here and Sydney cannot be said to have an exceptionally high standard of living. So where is our alleged “high standard” in New Zealand? —Yours, etc., PRODIGAL SON. November 25, 1957.
