Problem Of Peace
Sir, —I like N. M. Bell’s letter. Let us have as many projects for peace as military projects. It would pay us handsomely. The only defence in modern war is offence, so where is your security? You are at the mercy of anyone who has more hideous weapons of offence than you have. The days of balance-of-power politics are gone. We live in one world. If we do not learn to live and let live as nations, the result will be a suicidal conflict in which out civilisation will perish*. Two thousand years ago Jesus said. “Love your enemies.” but we still do not believe He was right The “madness” of the pacifist is today becoming plain common sense; it is either live together or perish.—Yours, etc., M. THORNE. November 26, 1957.
Sir,—lf N. M. Bell were not such an ardent admirer of Betrand Russell he might ask why a highranking materialist should ignore the principle of evolution. Man has come a long way since he left the jungle. He has still a long way to go to reach perfection. If modern civilisation is to be saved the errors of former ones must be avoided. The dangers of appeasement, complacency and defeatism should be conquered.—Yours, etc., T. SHAW. Westport, November 28, 1957.
