WINDS REACH 50 M.P.H.
Gusty Weather Ins Christchurch The weather in Christchurch yesterday continued to provide the extremes of the last few days. After being parched by northwest conditions, and buffeted by north-west gales in the last few days, Wednesday morning’s heavy rain was followed yesterday by gusty, bitterly-cold southwest winds, which reached velocities over the 50 miles an hour mark. The strongest gust, just after 3.30 p.m., reached 53 miles an hour. Almost as many branches were blown from trees in the city as in Monday’s north-west gale. Showers accompanied the southwest winds yesterday at times, but they were very light, and from 6 ajn. to 6 p.m. only .02in was recorded. With the wind and rain came a substantial drop in temperatures. From 75 degrees over the week-end, the thermometer dropped yesterday to an average of 52 degrees in the city. The forecast is brighter for the week-end. Winds are expected to decrease and temperatures to rise with the general predicted improvement in the weather.
