The Australian universities are in a critical condition and drastic remedies are necessary to prevent the situation from becoming “catastrophic,” a special committee headed by Britain’s Sir Keith Murray has reported to the Federal Government.
Sir Keith Murray is chairman of the Universities Grants Commission in Britain.
The report, which was tabled in the House of Representatives by the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies), recommended Government assistance to meet pressing problems faced by the universities. It said that three grave problems confronting the universities were the steeply increasing rate of enrolment, the high rate of failures, and the existing provision for the sciences and technology.
