CATHEDRAL CHALICE

Dedication On Sunday

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, November 28.

The dedication of a valuable chalice and paten bequeathed to the Auckland Cathedral in appreciation of the life and work of Sir John Logan Campbell and Lady Logan Campbell will take place in the Cathedral Church of St. Mary, Parnell, on Sunday. Some of the finest stones from Sir John Logan Campbell’s gifts of diamonds, emeralds and amethysts to his wife are in the base and the knop of the chalice. The vessels are the gift of Sir John and Lady Logan Campbell’s daughter, the late Mrs Winifred Humphreys. The dedication will be performed by the Bishop of Auckland, the Rt. Rev. W. J. Simkin. The vessels are being kept in •- special place of security in the city. The bequest of gold, silver and jewellery, valued at about £lOOO, was made specifically to the Dean and Chapter of the Auckland Cathedral. Round the base of the chalice is a chaste but intricate design of grapes and vine leaves which rise on to the flanges leading from the base into the stem to encircle three small enamel medallions, one of which depicts the Crucifixion and the other two the arms of the Diocese of Auckland and the arms of the City of Auckland.
