TRANSPACIFIC FLIGHT

Small Aircraft For Australia

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 28.

Flown by New Zealanders, the smallest aircraft ever to cross the Pacific Ocean, two Cessna 310 B’s, landed at Whenuapai this afternoon after their 10,180-mile flight from Oakland, California. The twin-engine planes were flown by Mr Miles King and Mr P. L. Lightband. Describing the trip as “good,” Mr King said the flight from Nandi to Whenuapai took a little longer than expected because the aircraft encountered stronger winds than forecast.

Fitted with wing-tip tanks for the trip, the two Cessnas will be delivered to Australia for use by the Australian Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation for clo.ud seeding. The navigators for the flight were Australians, Messrs Arthur Tapp and William Withers, both from New South Wales. The Cessnas set out from Oakland last Friday after bad weather had earlier forced them to return to their base. The machines were flown to New Plymouth later this afternoon, where they will be adapted to take the cloud-seeding quipment before being flown to Australia.
