OPAWA ROAD SEWER

Surface To Be Fixed Soon

The rough surface «of Opawa road, where sewerage work is being done, will be improved next week, according to the contractor (Mr H. Hobson). Mr Hobson said that arrangements had been made to dress the road with base-course, a mixture of clay and fine metal, which would carry the heavy holiday traffic without breaking up. However, the road would not be tar-sealed until the sewer connexions were completed next February. Mr Hobson said that the connecting of laterals was not part of the contract. “If the trench was sealed now, it would only have to be opened again later on.” he said.

The job was begun last March, and Mr Hobson said that many difficulties had arisen because of the soft nature of the country. Mr E. F. Scott, the Engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board, said that several other contractors engaged on sewerage work were endeavouring to have the roads sealed before Christmas. “This includes Edgeware rood, where dust has roused some complaints from residents during the last few weeks,” he said.
