SOCIAL SECURITY TAX EVASION

Four Defendants Fined £585

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 27.

In little more than an hour, Mr J. W. Kealy, S.M.. today imposed fines totalling £585 on four defendants —three firms and one individual —who pleaded guilty to charges of knowingly applying the amount deducted from wages for the social security charge for purposes other than payment of the charge. The offences were “plain embezzlement.’’ the Magistrate said. “I fail to find any difference between theft of public funds and plain theft. For a firm to fail to forward social security charges deducted from eployees’ wages because it is in financial difficulty is just as bad as the individual, who, also in financial straits, steals. “The list in court today shows just how very prevalent this theft has become.” The defendants were Bird and Sons. Ltd., fined £3O on each of three charges: Hubert Milton Hunt, fined £l5 on each of five charges; Heath and De Koning, Ltd., fined £3O on each of 10 charges; and Tibco Products, Ltd., flned £2O on each of six charges.
