CYCLING Combined Clubs’ Weekly Meeting At English Park

Two riders, D. Lyes and T. Way, crashed in the back straight at the Combined Cycling Clubs’ weekly meeting at English Park last evening. Before the start of the meeting. T. Shepherd, who last year was only a novice rider, rode for one hour paced by a motor-cycle. Conditions were quite good for this ride, and in the hour Shepherd covered 32 miles 160 yards, which was a great effort for a young rider.

In the final of the cash threelap event, J. Wildermoth and K. Giles, riding from the back mark, made up their handicap very quickly. At the bell, R. Lucas led

out, and on entering the straight. Giles and Wildermoth challenged strongly to hit the front, with Giles winning from Wildermoth by inches. P. Doyle • took the lead from Giles at the start of the 500 metre sprint. Doyle kept well up to the top of the banking, but Giles made a brilliant jump to lead by three lengths at the 220-yard mark. Doyle failed to catch Giles by half a wheel. Amateur The final of the amateur one mile and a half handicap was a thrilling event, with R. Fowler riding brilliantly. With four laps to go, he and B. A’Court were 90 yards behind the field, but with one lap and a half' to go he was nearly up. Going down the back straight in the last lap Fowler started to move round the field, but left his run a little late, and just failed to catch the fastmoving G. Shepherd and M. Parker, and had to be content with third place. A new style of racing was seen in the four-lap Italian team pursuit event. Each team comprised four riders and started on opposite sides of the track, and at the end of each lap the leading rider dropped off and for the last lap one rider of each team was left on the track. At the end of the first lap the A team had a 15yard lead, but at the end of the second lap the lead was reduced to eight yards. G. Shepherd then gave the B team a great lift by putting it five yards ahead, but in the last lap J. Blance overshadowed G. Painter of the B team, and won by 15 yards, having gained 20 yards in the last lap. Results : Cash Events One Lap Repechage Handicap.— First heat: K. Giles 1, P. Doyle 2. Time, 31.9 sec.
