SQUASH IS BOOMING

With the erection early next year of two new squash courts in Christchurch, the sport may be expected to boom in the city as it has done in Australian cities in the recent years. In Sydney, more than £600,000 has been spent on the construction of squash courts in the last two years, and the sport is rapidly becoming a favourite among people of all ages.

As a way of keeping in good condition, squash has no equal. A half-hour of squash is as strenuous as three sets of tennis, or an afternoon’s golf. The game is attracting new enthusiasts every day in Sydney, where the construction of new courts has been set off by the great increase in interest in the game. Squash rackets is expensive in Australia, where players pay 8s for a halfhour game In Sydney, a block of four courts, together with dressingrooms and other amenities, costs between £20,000 and £30,000. which is considerably more than a similar construction in Christchurch. However, the promoters recoup their expenses through the court fees, and the hire of rackets to players at 2s 6d for a game. Rugby players in the summer, and cricket and tennis players in the winter, find the sport ideal for keeping in condition in the offseason. Being an indoor game, it does not depend on the weather, and can be played at any time of the year. A Sydney survey has shown that players come from all walks of life.
