MICRO-WAVE UNIT IN CITY

Several Motorists

To Be Charged

Several speeding motorists detected in the city area recently by the Transport Department’s microwave unit will be charged in the Magistrate’s Court shortly, according to the Christchurch City Council’s Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar). He would not disclose how many motorists would be charged. For two weeks the unit was on loan to the City Council, and it has been reported that about 6000 motorists were checked during that period. Not all of them will be charged, and a number of first offenders were warned. The micro-wave detector has been used by the Transport Department for about two years, and has recently been introduced by the Wellington City Council. Its use in the Christchurch metropolitan area has been discussed by the Christchurch City Council, and the purchase of a unit is being considered.
