WHIPPET RACING CLUB
No Grounds For Meetings
The New Zealand Whippet Racing Club has nowhere to race in Christchurch. For about four years it has been racing on a track in Curries road, but complaints about the barking of dogs, the fact that a recent clause in the Counties Act prohibits organised sport on Sundays without a permit, and that the races were held in a growing residential area, have led to the owners of the ground terminating the club’s loan of the land.
Writing to the City Council, the club asked if there was an area in any of the city’s reserves that it could lease. On the advice of its reserves committee, the council decided that the application should be declined as there were no areas within reserves that would suit the requirements of the club.
