' In the 1955-56 season payments j totalled £367,169 on 93,265,1161 b i of beef. Details of payments in the season just ended are:—Chilled beef. £68.178; baby beef. £2130; ox and heifer beef. £35.209; cuts. £1253; cow beef. £4086. Deficiency payments are made when prices of the basic grades of meat are below those which give producers a return equivalent to the minimum prices set out in the Meat Export Prices Act. 1955. In the 1956-57 season payments were made on beef from October until the end of January, when export prices for all classes of meat were sufficiently buoyant to obviate the necessity for declaring deficiency payments. This position ruled until the end of the season. There have been no deficiency payments in the current season which began on October 1.
