ALGERIAN REFORM
Debate In Paris
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) 'Rec. 11 p.m.) PARIS, Nov. 26. Th e French National Assembly I will open a debate today on a new home. rule bill for Algeria' in an atmosphere of tension caused! by a policy change at the weekend congress of the Radical Party. The young Radical Prime Minister. Mr Felix Gaillard? is expected to seek a vote of confidence j during the debate, due to last for j the rest of the week. I Political observers said the I coalition Government was expected to win the vote of confidence. but Mr Gaillard would undoubtedly be embarrassed by the decision of his own party congress favouring talks with Morocco and Tunisia on a negotiated settlement. The reform bill for Algeria includes provisions aimed at meeting the fears of the 1.200.000 Europeans in Algeria that they would be swamped in elections by the votes of the eight million Moslems. It proposes “councils of communities” composed of an equal number of Europeans and Moslems to complement the elected “territorial assemblies” which will be given a considerable say in running local affairs. Shootings in Paris Four persons were killed and eight injured in three North African shooting affairs in Paris during the night. The three incidents occurred within an hour in different parts of Paris. A fusillade of shots in a North African cafe and on the street outside killed two North Africans and injured six. A North African and a French woman were killed by gunfire in
an Algerian restaurant. One man was injured. In the third incident, a North African was killed in the street with a bullet through the head by an assailant who fled.
