MEN INJURED ON SHIP
Sling Of Timber Collapses Five men were injured when a sling of timber being unloaded from a ship at Lyttelton yesterday collapsed. Those injured were Komin Higashi, chief officer of the Japanese cargo ship Chowa Maru. married. of Tokyo; W. Broomhall, married, of Riccarton; Edward Thomas, married, of Lyttelton; J. Statton. married, of Opawa; and Ronald J. Wasley, married, of Heathcote. The last four are waterside workers.
Oak planks were being unloaded from No. 4 hold of the Chowa Maru. A sling of the planks was being raised from the hold when a plank slipped out. This loosened the others, which splayed out on to the deck, striking the men.
The injured men were attended by Dr. A. J. K. Simmance and by Sister H. Williams, of the Industrial Health Clinic at Lyttelton. Messrs Higashi, Broomhall, and Thomas were taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital by a St. John ambulance. Messrs Wasley and Statton were treated at the clinic and were later able to return to work.
