Hillary’s Tractor Train Reaches Depot 480

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 26. The tractor group of the New Zealand support party for the British Trans-Antarctic Expedition today reached Depot 480, about 720 miles from the South Pole, according to a message from Sir Edmund Hillary received by the Ross Sea Committee tonight.

“We will remain here for about 10 days while the Beaver flies in supplies to the depot for Dr Vivian Fuchs’s crossing party,” Sir Edmund Hillary said. “Bad weather has retarded the progress of the four dog teams but we expect them to arrive here during the next few days,” he added. The tractor party had an “unpleasant time” in a crevassed area yesterday, but extricated all the vehicles safely and found an excellent route further west. “The weather during the fortnight’s trip from Depot 280 has been generally windy with a heavy drift at times, and temperatures about minus 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit,” he said. “The surface has varied from deep soft snow to hard rough sastrugi but the vehicles have

arrived in good condition although two of the sledges require repairing.” Sir Edmund Hillary said all members of the party were well.
