Milford Road Open Again

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, November 26.

The Milford road was now open but it must be negotiated with care, said the resident engineer of the Ministry of Works at Invercargill. Mr H. W. Smith, today.

The Homer Tunnel would be open from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. During these periods traffic would be allowed to travel first from Milford and then to Milford in half-hour periods.

The Whitestone bridge was washed out by heavy rain, making a 20-mile detour through Manapouri necessary. There had been two slips in the Eglinton Valley, but Mr Smith said work was proceeding on these. Snow 6in thick is lying round Homer Tunnel, but the snow above the tunnel itself is gone, making the possibility of further slips remote.
