(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, November 26 Mohammed Heikal. editor of the Cairo newspaper “Al Ahram” told several stories about the Russian leaders when he returned after a three weeks’ visit to Moscow, says the British United Press.
He said that Lavrenti Beria, the former Soviet police chief, was sentenced to death on charges that he was a British spy and that he kept a harem of young gfrls. This information, he added, was contained in official documents of the trial.
He also said that when the alleged plot to get rid of Mr Khrushchev was at its height. Mr Dimitri Shepilov accused Mr Khrushchev of lacking the social graces needed to lead the party. He was very embarrassed on one occasion, said Mr Shepilov. when Mr Khrushchev was talking to the President of Finland “and all the time was scratching his chest and armpit as if all the world's fleas were biting him.”
