(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) PENANG, November 15.
Heavily armed riot field-force police rushed to the First Magistrate’s Court today, when more than 200 Chinese students gathered outside. Stecl-hclmeted police, in armoured trucks, cleared the students from the vicinity of the Court while three other pupils were charged with trespass. The three students. Ding Ngoh Sing, aged 16, Teh Chen Chow, aged 15, and Heah Chin How. aged 17, were arrested yesterday near the scene of student riots outside the Penang Chinese High School. They were charged with trespassing into a house opposite the school, and were released on 500 Malayan dollars bail (about £5B). School Guarded Elsewhere in Penang lhe situation was quiet, although strong police patrols guarded Chinese schools closed yesterday by a Government order. They were closed after defiant students, protesting against a Government decision banning x over-age students, had been cleared from the Chinese Girls’ High School by police using tear gas and baton charges. Penang’s Chief Minister, Wong Pow Nee, said later that firm action would be taken to prevent further disturbances. He said that he had conferred with the police, who reported the situation remained quiet, but “tense.** He would not see any group representing the students. “The situation is well under control.” he said. He would not comment on the likelihood of further trouble, but the Chinese students were reported by another Government source to be planning a further protest.
