AWARDS MADE TO CHEMISTS
Dr. F. H. McDowell Wins 1.C.1. Prize
Dr. F. H. McDowell, chief chemist of the Dairy Research Institute, Palmerston North, has been awarded the Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. prize for contributions to chemistry in New Zealand in the last five years. The Morcom Green Edwards prize which is awarded to a chemist under 35 years of age for research work, mainly in some field of applied chemistry, has been won by Mr T. Marshall, a chemist in the Dominion Laboratory, Wellington.. These awards were announced by the president of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (Mr W. A. Joiner) at a general meeting of the institute held in Christchurch.
Dr. McDowell, who is an expert on buttermaking, recently published a book on buttermaking which will probably remain the standard text in that field for some time to come. He has done much research into problems relating to the dairy Industry. The prize consists of a medal and 25 guineas. Mr Marshall was awarded the prize of 25 guineas fqr the work he has done in connexion with corrosion at the Wairakei geothermal power scheme.
