SCREENING OF MIGRANTS

Methodist Synod’s Discussion (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 28. The padre in the Captain Cook two voyages ago, the Rev. R. Day, today told the Wellington Methodist Synod that he failed to understand how some of the immigrants coming from Britain got through the screening. He explained that he was aboard the ship during the voyage m which fires broke out in the ship. “While the greater number of the passengers were decent and would make acceptable settlers. I just couldn’t understand how some of them got through,” he said.

He put forward a notice of motion containing the request that the Government, through the Immigration Department, be urged to ensure a more adequate screening of intending immigrants so as to lessen the number of undesirables who were arriving. Because of his , trip in the Captain Cook, he thought it essential to bring the matter up, he said.

The synod went into committee, and, after discussion, decided to Withdraw the question of screening from the motion. It decided, however, to pass Mr Day’s report on to the public questions committee.
